Google is handing students a free year of Gemini AI Pro, and while that headline is accurate, the reality is more geographically uneven than it first appears. Students in the United States can claim the full Gemini Pro plan at no cost for 12 months; students everywhere else get Gemini Plus instead. Both are free for a year, but they are not the same product, and the difference is worth understanding before you sign up.
What the offer includes, and where you stand
The promotion is open to students worldwide and runs until 31 December 2026. Claiming it takes three steps: pick your plan on Google’s promotional offer page, verify your student status through SheerID, and add a payment method. That last requirement is the one to note — more on it below.
Outside the US, Gemini Plus normally costs €4.99 per month and bundles access to Gemini Omni, double the standard Gemini usage limits and 400GB of Google storage. The storage allocation is quietly the most practical part for a student: it comfortably covers a degree’s worth of documents, photos and backups, and it is exactly the sort of thing people forget they are already paying for separately.
US students receive Gemini Pro, which normally sits at €21.99 per month. For students who do not qualify for the free Pro tier, Google is discounting Pro to €5.49 per month. There is also a YouTube Premium bundle at €10.99 per month, a 70% reduction on the usual €21.99.
Study Notebooks is the actual reason to care
The feature that justifies the subscription for coursework is Study Notebooks, which launched in June. You upload your own study materials and notes, and Gemini generates personalised quizzes or fuller explanations grounded in that specific content rather than in generic training data. For revision, that distinction matters: an AI that tests you on your lecturer’s slides is far more useful than one testing on the internet’s average understanding of a topic.
Google says further upgrades are coming over the next few weeks, including graphics and images inside lessons. Gemini can also build functional 3D models for certain subjects — a DNA strand being the example given — which should suit visual learners and anyone working through structural or spatial material.
Read the renewal terms before you celebrate
Here is the part that deserves emphasis: this is not a permanently free subscription. When the 12-month promotional window closes, standard pricing applies automatically, and because you had to attach a payment method up front, that transition happens without any further action from you. Anyone who does not want to start paying €4.99, €5.49 or €21.99 a month needs to cancel before the offer expires. Set a calendar reminder on the day you sign up, not eleven months later.
Why Google is giving this away
Free student tiers are not charity, they are habit formation — the same playbook Spotify, Adobe and Microsoft have run for years. Students who spend a full academic year drafting, revising and researching inside Gemini graduate with a workflow built around it, at precisely the moment they start paying for software themselves. Twelve months is also long enough to cover an entire academic cycle, which is not an accident.
The regional split is the more debatable choice. Reserving the stronger Pro tier for US students while the rest of the world gets Plus creates a two-speed offer during a period when access to capable AI tools genuinely affects academic output. It is understandable commercially, given where the competitive pressure is fiercest, but it is a fair thing for international students to be irritated about.
If you are eligible, this is straightforwardly worth claiming: a year of Plus with 400GB of storage attached is good value for nothing, and Study Notebooks is a legitimately useful revision tool rather than a repackaged chatbot. Just treat the payment method you hand over as a commitment with a deadline attached.
